KIEV, March 3 – The natural gas dispute between Ukraine and Gazprom quickly escalated late Monday after a top government official accused the Russian company of failing to pay for gas transit to Europe.

First Deputy Prime Minister Oleksandr Turchynov said Gazprom had failed to make any payments for the transit since December 2007, suggesting European gas supplies have been increasingly becoming part of the dispute.
