BRUSSELS, Nov. 30 - The European Union will shortly announce its decision to grant market economy status to Ukraine to mark the progress the country has made over the past 10 months, officials said Wednesday.

Ukraine has been persistently trying to obtain the status for years, but the progress had been made only after liberal Viktor Yushchenko was sworn to the presidency in January.
