KIEV, Dec. 4 - President Viktor Yushchenko on Friday called on the European Union to begin discussions for improving the system of natural gas supplies on the continent and making it more transparent.

Yushchenko argued that Ukraine, the key transit nation for Russian gas supplies to Europe, has been annually buying $7 billion worth of gas to meet increasing demand in Europe during the winter.
