KIEV, Sept. 12 - Ukraine plans to spend $4.5 billion to modernize and reconstruct its Soviet-era network of natural gas pipelines that supply Europe with much of its gas, Ukraine's state-owned gas company Naftogaz said Tuesday.

The four-year reconstruction project will help increase gas volumes and the reliability of gas transit services, the company said.
