KIEV, Feb. 23 ??“ Russian President Vladimir Putin asked Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko Thursday about the latest developments in Crimea after Kiev had indicated a local referendum on the status of the Russian language was illegal.

The inquiry comes a day after Ukrainian officials have said the referendum scheduled on March 26 in Crimea would be in violation of the Ukrainian constitution and must be cancelled.
