KIEV, Feb. 22 ??“ Crimean Parliament voted Wednesday to hold a referendum on the status of the Russian language in a move that breaches the Ukrainian constitution and may lead to escalating tensions in the region.

Crimean Prosecutor Viktor Shemchuk reacted Wednesday by sending an official letter to Parliament demanding Crimean lawmakers to immediately cancel the vote that sets the referendum date on March 26.
