KIEV, Feb. 14 - The Ukrainian economy expanded 0.9% on the year in January, suggesting the country has been successfully weathering a steep natural gas price hike, figures released Tuesday show.

The government expected the economy to somewhat contract in January due to unusually high number of holidays this year and due to a 90% hike in gas prices that had been forced by Russia.
