KIEV, Oct. 20 ??“ Petro Verbytskiy, the man who has been in charge of assembling sweeping measures to protect Ukraine from bird flu virus, resigned Wednesday, a person familiar with the situation said Thursday.

The resignation comes as Ukraine has been launching extra measures safeguarding poultry industry from the virus following reported cases of bird flu in Turkey, Greece and Romania, in close proximity from Ukraine.
