KIEV, Oct. 19 ??“ President Viktor Yushchenko Wednesday ordered sweeping measures to be taken throughout Ukraine to prevent an outbreak of a bird flu that could be deadly to humans and devastating to the poultry industry.

The measures, ranging from restrictions on imports, border crossings to strict monitoring of domestic poultry production, are the most massive coordinated effort in recent memory aimed at preventing a virus.
