KIEV, Sept. 13 - Ukraine's economy contracted in August for the first time in six years marking a shocking reversal from the robust expansion last year and suggesting budget troubles may emerge within months.

The economy shrunk 1.6% on the year in August, dashing the government's hopes the economy would start picking up speed by the end of the year, a government source told Interfax-Ukraine Tuesday.
