KIEV, Aug. 13 - An attack from currency speculators was responsible for the hryvnia's sudden appreciation against the U.S. dollar last week, a senior official at the National Bank of Ukraine said.

The hryvnia rose to 4.98 to the dollar in trading between commercial banks Friday compared with 4.99 Thursday and 5.01 Wednesday as the central bank stayed away from purchasing excess dollars.
