Consumer prices growth in Kyiv outpaces Ukraine’s national average
KYIV, June 16 – Consumer prices in the Ukrainian capital rose by 2.1% in May compared to April, outpacing the nationwide average of 1.3%, Kyiv's Department of Statistics reported.
"Since the start of the year, consumer prices in Kyiv have increased by 7.9%, while the nationwide figure stands at 5.6%," the office noted.
According to the data, the steepest price hikes in Kyiv in May were seen in fruit – up 20%, meat and meat products – up 6.1%, pasta – up 5.3%, and non-alcoholic beverages – up 4.4%.
Bread rose by 2.8%, cheese and cottage cheese by 2.7%, and vegetables by 2.6%.
At the same time, prices for some goods in Kyiv declined in May: eggs down 4.5%, clothing and footwear down 3.6%, and milk, fuel, and oils down 1.5%.
As reported, Ukraine's nationwide inflation accelerated to 1.3% in May, up from 0.7% in April and 1.5% in March. In May 2024, inflation stood at just 0.6%, making the annual rate for May 2025 rise to 15.9%, compared to 15.1% in April and 14.6% in March.
Ukraine's inflation dropped to 5.1% in 2023 after peaking at 26.6% the year before but is expected to rise to 12% for the full year 2024.
In April, the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) revised its 2025 inflation forecast for the second time this year, increasing it from 8.4% to 8.7%, while maintaining expectations that inflation will return to the 5% target in 2026. (om/ez)
