Ukraine seeks German help in Iran probe
Journal Staff Report

KYIV, Jan 15 - President Volodymyr Zelenskiy on Wednesday asked Chancellor Angela Merkel for Germany’s support in bringing the perpetrators of last week’s plane crash in Iran to justice, Reuters reported.

After initially denying blame, Iran acknowledged on Friday that it had mistakenly shot down a Ukrainian passenger plane, killing all 176 people on board shortly after it took off from Tehran for Kyiv.

Zelenskiy said in a phone call with Merkel that he expects the perpetrators to be prosecuted and the families and airline to be compensated. “The President of Ukraine called on Germany to contribute politically to this process,” the statement from Zelenskiy’s office said.

The developments come as Ukraine is trying to establish whether Iran will hand over the black boxes from the passenger.

An Iranian investigator was meant to visit Ukraine on Wednesday to check whether a Ukrainian laboratory could decode the black boxes but did not arrive, said Polina Chyzh, head of the Department of International Legal Cooperation and Asset Recovery at the Prosecutor General’s office.

Hasan Rezaeefar, the head of the air accident investigation commission of the Civil Aviation Organization of Iran, was supposed to arrive in Ukraine to choose a laboratory for deciphering the "black boxes" of the plane of International Airlines of Ukraine (UIA) crashed in Tehran, the National Bureau of investigation of aircraft accidents and incidents with civil aircraft of Ukraine reported.

Chyzh said Iran had not officially answered a Ukrainian request for access to the black boxes, prompting Ukraine to make a second request.

Iran on Tuesday arrested people accused of a role in shooting down the Ukrainian airliner and had also detained 30 people involved in protests that have swept the nation for four days since the military belatedly admitted its error.

President Hassan Rouhani promised a thorough investigation into the “unforgivable error” in an address on Tuesday. It was the latest in a series of apologies by the leadership that has done little to quell public anger.

London will host a meeting on Thursday of Canada, Ukraine, Britain and other nations who had citizens on the plane. Ukraine said they would consider legal action against Tehran.

Rouhani said the government would be accountable to Iranians and those nations who lost citizens. Most of those on board the flight were Iranians or dual nationals and 57 were Canadian. (rt/ez)
