KYIV, March 1 – National joint-stock company Naftogaz Ukrainy is mulling a possibility of adding an additional volume of gas to the underground gas storage facilities of Ukraine if Russia's Gazprom stops gas transit across the country after 2019, Naftogaz CEO Andriy Kobolev told reporters after a press conference in Kyiv on Friday.
"We are most likely to expect attempts to completely interrupt the transit. We need to prepare for this. We plan to attract a loan for the purchase of this gas. Now we are discussing this issue with a number of international institutions. There is a potential desire to provide us with funds, but there is only one problem: it is unlikely that this desire materializes before May [before the presidential election]," he said.
