Ukraine politicians condemn Crimea plan
Journal Staff Report

KIEV, Feb. 20 – Ukrainian politicians on Monday condemned a controversial peace plan submitted to the Trump administration that calls for leasing Crimea to Russia for 50 to 100 years.

Lawmakers said the plan must be investigated by the SBU security service because it would entail ‘encroaching on the country’s territorial integrity.’

The response shows the plan has zero chance of approval in Parliament and potentially indicating that it may have been drafted outside of Ukraine.

Andriy Artemenko, a Ukrainian lawmaker, submitted the plan to Michael Flynn, President Trump’s national security advisor days before he had resigned amid controversial connections to the Russian government, The New York Times reported Sunday.

The Radical Party at a meeting on Monday voted to expel Artemenko from its group in Parliament, a move showing the party does not want to be affiliated with the plan.

“This [plan] should be investigated by the SBU security service because it’s about encroaching on territorial integrity,” Oleh Liashko, the leader of the Radical Party, said. “I don’t rule out that anti-Ukrainian forces are behind this.”

Among the people that may have been involved in drafting the plan, Liashko mentioned Viktor Medvedchuk, Russian President Vladimir Putin’s point man on Ukraine, and the Opposition Bloc, a Ukrainian opposition party that harbors most pro-Russian politicians.

The developments may indicate that Moscow is trying via different channels to find ways to legitimize the annexation of Crimea and to remove crippling economic sanctions imposed by the U.S. and the EU that are hurting the Russian economy.

Serhiy Leshchenko, an independent Ukrainian lawmaker, said the plan was drafted with the involvement of Vladislav Surkov, a Putin aide, and was recently discussed in Moscow during the visit by Yuriy Boyko, a leader of the Opposition Bloc.

“Boyko recently joined meetings in Moscow,” Leshchenko wrote on his Facebook page. “Artemenko played the role of a delivery man and will now be playing the role of a front man.”

Serhiy Liovochkin, the leader of the Opposition Bloc, on Monday denied the party had anything to do with the plan.

“Obviously, neither I nor Boyko nor the Opposition Bloc party had anything to do with the so-called Artemenko plan,” Liovochkin said in a statement, adding that the party sees the Minsk agreement as the only way to peace in eastern Ukraine.

President Trump’s personal lawyer Michael Cohen, along with Felix Sater, a business associate who helped Trump scout deals in Russia, helped Artemenko to deliver the plan to Flynn, according to The New York Times. (nr/ez)
