KIEV, Sept. 11 - Ukraine will need to import more coal to avoid shortages after fighting with pro-Russian separatists destabilized the country’s key coal-producing region, Volodymyr Hroysman, the regional development and housing minister said Thursday.
“We have coal shortages at approximately 5 million mt by the end of the year,” Hroysman said.
He said the government was taking steps to secure additional coal imports to offset the shortages. The comment comes days after Prime Minister Arseniy Yatseniuk has announced Ukraine will import 1 million mt of coal from South Africa.
