KIEV, Dec. 1 ??“ The European Union announced on Thursday it had decided to grant market economy status to Ukraine, a decision that will ease the country??™s integration with the West and improve trade.

The decision is also the first major foreign policy victory for President Viktor Yushchenko, who has pledged in January to turn the country towards greater cooperation with the E.U.
