KIEV, Sept. 5 - Real profits at Nikopol Ferroalloy Plant are probably much greater than have been previously reported as the company had massively used a scheme to minimize tax payments, a government official said Monday.

The government has been for a week unsuccessfully trying to take over Nikopol, but its current owner, billionaire businessman Viktor Pinchuk, has been orchestrating a vigorous campaign to prevent the takeover.
