KIEV, Aug. 4 ??“ A controversial transaction approved by the government opens way for massive imports of raw cane sugar to Ukraine in an attempt to stop a massive sugar price hike, officials said Thursday.

The move, approved at a Cabinet of Ministers meeting Wednesday, shows the government is scrambling to cope with sugar shortages that have pushed prices up 60% over the past four months.
